Chicago Police Officer Killed in Motorcycle Accident September 2016

September 18, 2016: An off duty Chicago Police officer was killed in a motorcycle wreck today around 2AM.

The officer was pronounced dead at Loyola University Medical Center, where he was taken after the accident occurred.

According to an article in the Chicago Tribune, the driver who hit him ran a red light, is in custody, and charges are pending. Does this mean the driver who hit him was drunk?

Our thoughts and prayers go out to this officer’s family.

Can officers sue?

Any time an officer is injured or killed in the line of duty or especially while off duty they do have rights. Simply serving your community does not automatically exclude you from compensation. If you were told that it does you should speak to an experienced Chicago accident lawyer.

An attorney is not needed in every crash, however they can serve up legal advice and tell you what to expect. For example, if an insurer is not willing to pay out a significant amount of funds for a wrongful death, an attorney could help you obtain this type of compensation.
